Arab Youth Initiative (AYI)

Overview:
Youth in the Arab region today constitute its largest demographic. This fast-growing population presents a great opportunity for promoting social and economic growth and contributing to the development of Arab society.

Arab youth, however, face several social and economic challenges in terms of receiving quality education, finding decent employment, and engaging with their communities. Their education often inadequately prepares them for job market demands, creating high levels of unemployment. They are also rarely involved in developing the policies that affect them.

Key to the growth and development of Arab youth– and, in turn, Arab society- is empowering youth to take ownership of the problems they face and play a participatory role in finding solutions.

The Arab Youth Initiative aims to: assess the social and economic challenges facing Arab youth today, and develop the appropriate policies and strategies to overcome them, with a view to promoting the development of Arab youth and fostering their potential to create a better future for the region.

Objectives:
The initiative’s objectives are:
  • Understanding and promoting the changing needs of Arab youth
  • Creating Arab governments that are more aware of, responsive to, and engaged with the needs of their youth
  • Empowering Arab youth to take ownership of their issues through capacity-building, up-skilling, and participation in policy-making
  • Nurturing a more socially-inclusive society for youth development across the Arab region.

In order achieve these objectives; the initiative will consist of three key tracks:

1) Policy research: Focusing on Arab youth’s challenges and needs in the following areas:
  • Education
  • Employment & Entrepreneurship
  • Social & Community Participation

2) Policy Advisory: Advising and informing Arab policymakers on current issues pertaining to youth development, to support them in the creation of locally-fitting policies.

3) Regional Development Activities: Drawing on a regional network of practitioners and experts to promote:
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Bridging the gap between policy and research
  • Translating research findings into actions and initiatives that will enhance youth education, employability, social inclusion and community participation.
