Mhamed Biygautane on BBC World News

Mhamed Biygautane took part in the Middle East Business Report Debate produced by the BBC World News, and aired on July, 27th. The debate discussed the potential landscape of business and the investment environment in the MENA region after Islamic parties rose to power.  Biygautane argued that it was too early to guess whether or not the winning Islamic parties would be able to trigger economic growth, decrease unemployment and enhance governance in the region. However, he stated that they had almost no experience in issues related to monetary and fiscal policies, and seemed to lack the necessary knowledge to tackle the economic and social challenges that have been facing the region in the past few decades.

Attracting foreign direct investments and encouraging business is the vehicle for economic growth and prosperity, but political stability remains the main ingredient to encourage investors to invest in the region. He also commented on the applicability of the “Turkish Model” on the Arab world, and argued that the victorious Islamic parties in the region should develop their own unique political and developmental models that are applicable to the socio-economic needs. “Replicating other models is not the best way to start a new era in the region after the Arab Spring movement”, he said.
