Sustainable agriculture and food security: Together to Achieve the Resilience & Social Development of Small-Scale Farmers

Venue: Sofitel Dubai Downtown

Date: 13, 14 November 2023

Introduction:

In response to the recommendations of the Second Arab Report on Multi-dimensional Poverty, which was adopted by the Council of Arab Arab Climate ForumMinisters of Social Affairs at the beginning of 2023, regarding the transformation of Arab countries’ plans in the field of adaptation into climate solutions for sustainable agriculture and the rationalization of land use, this will formulate the structure of the second Arab Climate forum.

The Forum’s activities will focus on the documentation and assessment of the consequences of climate change on the agricultural sectors in the Arab region, specifically regarding family farming and small-scale agriculture, as well as how these consequences relate to food security and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.  In addition the forum will focus on mechanisms to enhance the resilience of small farmers and guarantees of social protection for them, in face of the fluctuations and losses that may befall them as a result of droughts, torrential rains, and other repercussions of climate change, noting that small farmers produces about 80% of the locally produced food in the countries of the Arab region, and any additional deterioration in this sector will put the Arab region’s food security at risk. What is at stake is what will have enormous social damage, especially on marginalized groups. The forum also intends to highlight the most important Arab experiences in promoting the social development of small farmers by building resilience capacities, and the experiences of developing the Arab countryside and the impacts of those experiences on reducing multidimensional poverty, especially the experiences in which Arab civil organizations will be involved.

We are targeting 150 participants of experts, researchers, civil society activists and other important figures invested in issues of climate change, agriculture, and food security.
